Kick Ass KakesWebsiteWhen asked how he created his name, Owner and Chef Jay Murphy laughs: “A friend said, ‘You don’t make normal cakes, you make kick ass cakes’ and it just clicked.” If you thought the name would be hard to forget, then you’ve never seen or tasted the cakes Chef Murphy creates. From his infamous life-size cake of Lady Gaga to his countless creations of tiered mastery, you will be in awe. Open since 2008, Murphy now has two locations in the Valley and also delivers stunning custom cakes and delicious treats. Not a vegan himself, he was introduced to the diet when a vegan friend asked him to make a carrot cake. The ball started rolling and hasn’t stopped since. The challenge to uphold his own high standards while producing a vegan product is a “constant evolution where I keep learning and constantly improve,” says Murphy as he explains how his initial carrot cake has evolved from not only being vegan but also becoming gluten free. Murphy has expanded his vegan offerings to over a handful of cake flavor combinations, but also includes individual desserts. His current best seller is a red velvet cupcake topped with made-from-scratch raspberry preserves and vegan cream-cheese-like frosting. His personal favorite is the Raspberry Oat Bar. The oat bar is a rustic combination of almonds, oats, sugar, a little bit of cinnamon, house-made raspberry or blueberry jam and vegan butter substitute. KAK on Central is open all days except Sunday and Monday and welcomes walk-ins and special orders. By Ashley Betz / Photo by Heather Gill |

NamiWebsite“‘Nami’ means ‘wave’ in Japanese and I view plant-based cuisine riding this wave. It’s big,” says Owner and Chef Damon Brasch. “People are questioning where their food comes from but also want to enjoy and celebrate. Food, in general, is a celebration and feeding people is an honor that I don’t take lightly. I want to show that vegan food is flavorful and decadent.” When Brasch’s wife was pregnant, she craved DQ’s Blizzard treat but in their dairy-free home there were no alternative options at the time. After experimenting, Brasch created his trademark tSoynami tSoft tServe with vegan mix-ins in 2011 and introduced it to the Valley, where it has been popular ever since. Working with Nami’s Head Baker Morgan Delight, Brasch has expanded their sweet offerings to include cakes, ice cream cakes, fresh fried doughnuts and soon, a take-and-bake cookie dough called Namidoh. Namidoh will provide consumers the convenience of vegan, gluten free, soy free dough in peanut butter, chocolate chip and seasonal flavors to take home and bake. “Namidoh will compete with any traditional dough like Tollhouse. They’re just as addictive,” guarantees Brasch. Nami is open all week serving sweet treats and a great Sunday Brunch. By Ashley Betz / Photo by Heather Gill |
