When asked how he created his name, Owner and Chef Jay Murphy laughs: “A friend said, ‘You don’t make normal cakes, you make kick ass cakes’ and it just clicked.”
If you thought the name would be hard to forget, then you’ve never seen or tasted the cakes Chef Murphy creates. From his infamous life-size cake of Lady Gaga to his countless creations of tiered mastery, you will be in awe.
Open since 2008, Murphy now has two locations in the Valley and also delivers stunning custom cakes and delicious treats. Not a vegan himself, he was introduced to the diet when a vegan friend asked him to make a carrot cake. The ball started rolling and hasn’t stopped since. The challenge to uphold his own high standards while producing a vegan product is a “constant evolution where I keep learning and constantly improve,” says Murphy as he explains how his initial carrot cake has evolved from not only being vegan but also becoming gluten free.
Murphy has expanded his vegan offerings to over a handful of cake flavor combinations, but also includes individual desserts. His current best seller is a red velvet cupcake topped with made-from-scratch raspberry preserves and vegan cream-cheese-like frosting. His personal favorite is the Raspberry Oat Bar. The oat bar is a rustic combination of almonds, oats, sugar, a little bit of cinnamon, house-made raspberry or blueberry jam and vegan butter substitute.
KAK on Central is open all days except Sunday and Monday and welcomes walk-ins and special orders.
