Almost 20 years ago, the Monterey Bay Aquarium created Seafood Watch with the intention of presenting a science-based standard for evaluating the environmental impacts of fishing and aquaculture. Those standards resulted in a guide for eaters that helps them make seafood buying choices that support a healthy ocean.

The guide uses three classifications:

• Green, or Best Choice, means the seafood comes from a well-managed fishery or farm that causes little damage to other marine species or the habitat.

• Yellow, or Good Alternative, means there may be issues, but the seafood is acceptable to buy and consume.

• Red, or Avoid, means don’t buy because the species may be overfished or caught or farmed in a way that does damage to the environment or other wildlife.

The guide comes in app form so you can download it to your phone or other device, and the information is updated twice a year. It’s an easy way to know what you’re buying and eating. For more information, visit seafoodwatch.org.
