Vegetable Literacy: Cooking and Gardening with Twelve Families from the Edible Plant Kingdom cookbook cover

New Mexico cookbook author Deborah Madison never disappoints and her recent opus chronicling 12 vegetable families is no exception. The recipes are impeccably tested, there's plenty of useful information and the photos by Christopher Hirsheimer and Melissa Hamilton are divine.

While some of the family groupings in the book are obvious (such as crucifers with broccoli, cabbage and turnips), others surprised us (celery, cilantro and parsley in the "carrot" family or all of the members of the "nightshade" family). Madison's recipes (even the simplest) are never run of the mill. To witness: simple boiled carrots enlivened with coconut butter and lime, and a recipe for braised summer cabbage with only two ingredients: the freshest cabbage and the best butter you can find.
