1910 Recipe for Mike O’Leary’s Arizona Statehood Cocktail

First appearing in 1910, the Arizona Statehood cocktail is one of the oldest known recipes for a mixed drink born and bred in the American Southwest, invented at Phoenix’s old Ford Hotel (located roughly where Phoenix’s City Hall now stands at Washington Street and 2nd Avenue) by head bartender Mike O’Leary,

Ingredients
  

  • Half Jigger (¾ ounce) Dubonnet Rouge
  • Half Jigger (¾ ounce) Rye Whiskey
  • Dash Gum (Syrup)
  • Dash Angostura Bitters
  • Ginger ale
  • 1 Cherry

Instructions
 

  • Mix together Dubonnet, whiskey, gum and bitters. Fill rest of the glass with ginger ale. Sink a cherry in it.
